PITLAKQ is a hydrodynamic and water quality model for mine pit lakes. It based on CE-QUAL-W2 and PHREEQC and has many additional features addressing the special need of mine pit lakes such as atmospheric exchange of CO2, kinetically controlled redox reactions, formation and precipitation of minerals, water quality impact of erosion, spatially distributed groundwater in- and outflow as well as capabilities to model lake water treatment with various methods. Acidity contributions of all sources and sinks over time can be quantitatively evaluated.

PITLAKQ has been successfully applied in Germany and Australia providing much better understanding of the governing processes for each individual lake.
